Barcelona – the open city, the Mediterranean city and, without a doubt, a city best enjoyed from its streets….” This is how the friendly young man’s voice on the Audio City Tour by Play & Tour greeted me last Saturday. After hearing a short introduction, which covered the most important information about Barcelona and the city’s historical background, I was all set to embark upon my voyage of discovery through Barcelona.
Play & Tour is not your average sightseeing tour, but rather an audio-guided tour that you can download onto your MP3 player, allowing you to discover the city at your leisure, and at your own pace. In addition to the audio tour, you can also download – directly onto your MP3 player – a city map, on which all major attractions are indicated and numbered. Under each number, you’ll find information about the attractions on your MP3 player – not too brief, not too detailed, but just the right amount.

This audio tour allows you to explore the city at a relaxed, flexible pace, and to design the tour program in your own way; you’re not bound to directions from a city guide book or forced to adhere to a specific timetable. You alone are in charge of mapping out the route and scheduling your explorations – as well as, of course, picking times for breaks in the action, since during your tour through the streets of Barcelona, you’ll inevitably stumble upon many intriguing little squares, restaurants, and cafes, which beckon you to come in and take a load off – at least that’s how it was for me.
Those of you who are looking for a bit more security, or want to take a tour with a specific theme, can just choose one of the 8 named tours – for example, the “Ramblas-Tapas” tour or the beach tour – and follow the places of interest in their listed order. And if you already have in mind what you want to see and what you don’t, then simply venture out on your own. Go straight to your desired tourist attraction with the help of the map, skip to the number in question on your MP3 player, absorb the information, and then move on to your next destination – it’s as easy as that!

With this audio tour, you not only see the sights and points of interest, but can also take time to stroll through the streets and passageways of the city, giving you a much better taste of the local flair and city life than you would get on your average bus tour, for example. And even if you’re too tired to keep walking, but still bound and determined to hear those last little tidbits of information about Barcelona’s highlights, you can simply seek out a sunny spot, take a seat, and go on listening to the explanations, while recuperating with a coffee. As I said, flexibility is the key…
Do you think an mp3 tour is a good way to see a city? Have you tried it? Would you like to? Please leave us a comment below we are always happy to hear from you!
Hey, I think your blog might be having browser compatibility issues. When I look at your website in Firefox, it looks fine but when opening in Internet Explorer, it has some overlapping. I just wanted to give you a quick heads up! Other then that, excellent blog!
Hi Joel,
Thanks for bringing that to our attention. We hope to have it sorted soon!
